Holiday boost for double-jabbed Brits as expensive Covid tests ‘to be scrapped’

Holiday-making Brits who have had two jabs will no longer be made to take expensive PCR Covid tests when coming home, UK officials are set to announce.

The requirement would be ditched for travellers returning from countries on the green and amber lists before the half-term holidays next month, reports the Mail on Sunday.

Cheaper lateral flow tests could be used instead, in a move that will slash the cost of going abroad and provide a much-needed boost for the battered travel industry.

While controversial PCR tests can cost upwards of £100, the NHS hands out lateral flow tests for free.

The move is to be discussed by top officials – including Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Chancellor Rishi Sunak, and Health Secretary Sajid Javid.

Alongside saving Brits money, the proposed change is intended to encourage more people to take up their jabs.

Sajid Javid told Sky News he was in favour of scrapping the compulsory PCR tests.

He said: "We have got a huge number of defences.

"Of course, we still want to remain very cautious, and there are some things that – when it comes to travel for example – there are some rules that are going to have to remain in place.

"But the PCR test that is required upon your return to the UK from certain countries, look, I want to try and get rid of that as soon as I possibly can.

"I have already asked officials that at the moment we can, let's get rid of these kind of intrusions, the costs that generates for families, particularly families just trying to go out and holiday.

"We shouldn't be keeping anything like that in place for a second longer than is absolutely necessary."

But officials have made it clear that those who aren’t double jabbed will still have to buy a PCR test.

The cost of the tests has sparked widespread anger and claims that firms are profiting at the expense of ordinary Brits.

Some families have been forced to spend up to £600 on the pricey requirement.
