A heroin pusher was caught bang to rights when his phone played a "Hello, I'm your drug dealer" ringtone while he was in custody.

Smack peddling dad-of-six David Owens had been arrested for selling drugs to someone on a Swansea street when his mobile played the incriminating jingle right in front of the plain clothes cops who'd just felt his collar.

The 48-year-old, along with his customer Matthew Wright, was busted in the Mount Pleasant area of the city on the afternoon of January 29 2020, Swansea Crown Court heard.

The arresting officers had been on patrol in the community when they saw the two men on Portia Terrace conducting "an exchange," reports WalesOnline.

Owens was detained immediately, while 34-year-old Wright made a run for it, at which point he was seen to discard a package containing £150 worth of heroin.

Meanwhile, as Owens was being held, his phone rang and "Hello, it's your drug dealer" was heard.

He was frisked and found to be carrying £180, while a subsequent search of his house in Hanover Street, Uplands, uncovered wraps of heroin worth around £900, along with three weighing scales, a tick-list of money owed, and £7,646 in cash.

Owens had previously pleaded guilty to possession of heroin with intent to supply, being concerned in the supply of heroin, and possession of criminal property – the money – when he appeared in the dock for sentencing this week.

He has 26 previous convictions for 159 offences including perverting the course of justice and the possession of cannabis and weapons.

Wright, of Arthur Street in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, had also previously pleaded guilty to the simple possession of heroin when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. He has 24 previous convictions for 46 offences.

Defending Owens, Anthony O'Connell said the dad-of-six had an "addictive personality" for drink and drugs and his life had spiralled downwards after "getting in with the wrong people."

Taking into consideration the guilty pleas, he was sentenced Owens to four years and three months in prison – up to half of which he'll serve in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community.

Wright was fined £300.
