Hero man wades through thick mud to rescue stranded goose in lake
A man has been hailed a hero for wading through thick mud to save a stranded goose in a lake.
Video taken by a park-goer captures the brave man stripping down to his underpants and grabbing a long stick as an aid while he makes his way to the poor bird.
The goose is seen trying to free itself by flapping the wings but its feet is stuck in the mud.
The man carefully lifts up the goose and carries it back to the shore.
Onlookers cheered and clapped for the save, they passed him bottles of water for him to wash off the mud after he released the goose to freedom.
The heartwarming scene was captured on Thursday in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham, where the lake was drained of water for cleaning purposes for the first time in 35 years.
Cheena Singh, who filmed the moment, told Birmingham Live: "It was tremendous, heroic- how many people would do that?
“Hats off to him.
"We did not know how deep it was in the middle and he could have been walking on anything. He could’ve got stuck and fallen over.
"There was quite a crowd there and they were cheering this guy.
“He stripped down to his underpants and was in there. The larger of the lakes is being dredged and all the water is being taken out, it’s left a very muddied up slurry.
“There was a goose that had been stuck there for quite some time and the guy decided to rescue it."
Birmingham City Council said the de-silt started in January.
A spokesman said: “We are working on much-needed improvements to the pool by removing as much silt as possible.
“Silt washes into the pool from the surrounding area over time and settles on the bottom, making the water dirty and pool shallower.
“The pool hasn’t been de-silted for 35 years, so this work is much heeded.
We apologise for any mess and inconvenience to park users during this time.
“The long-term benefit of the water quality, environment, wildlife and visitors will be worth the disruption.”
