Heartbreaking moment boy, 14, sings to his terminally-ill mum through hospice window days before she died
A HEARTBREAKING video has captured the moment a 14-year-old boy sang to his terminally-ill mum through a hospice window just days before she died.
Billy Devine sang to his mum, Jane, for the last time in September after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2019.
The brave teen, from Newbold, Derbyshire, sang a passionate rendition of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s Shallow with his friend Ellie Marie Scott as a surprise for his mum.
The pair performed in the Ashgate Hospicecare garden in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, where Billy’s mum was being looked after.
Due to Covid restrictions, the duet had to be performed outside while mum Jane looked through the window at the touching rendition.
Billy told Derbyshire Live the event “felt like the performance of a lifetime”.
He said: "I’ll never forget the look on my mum’s face as she watched from the window of her room. Just remembering it now gives me goosebumps.
"I love to sing, and my mum always loved to hear me sing, so I thought it would be the perfect surprise to sing her favourite song whilst she was staying at Ashgate.”
The moving video shows Billy singing the "A Star is Born" song wholeheartedly into a microphone with his friend Ellie.
But on September 7 – just days after her son’s impassioned recital – Jane tragically passed away.
In a touching tribute to his mum, Billy said: "Mum was such a caring person, she spent most of her life looking after other people and spending time with her family.
“She was such a strong and positive person to be around, even after she was diagnosed, she was determined to face the cancer head-on.
"Unfortunately, no matter how hard mum fought, this wasn’t going to be a battle she could win.
“That’s when she went to Ashgate Hospicecare and I can honestly say that the care she received was amazing, it is a very welcoming and comforting place, not just for mum but for the whole family."
Billy and his family have now raised £4,000 for Ashgate Hospicecare through fundraisers including coffee mornings, head shaving and bingo nights.
The teen said it was a “real honour” to raise money for the hospice and to be able to “repay some of the kindness they showed to our family when we needed it most".
Residents can commemorate a loved one who is no longer with them, whether they were cared for by Ashgate or not, at a virtual event on Sunday December 13.
