Heartbreak for ‘one in a million’ mum’s family as her death remains a ‘mystery’

The family of a young mother of twins have been left without any knowledge about how she tragically died after an inquest failed to determine the cause of her death.

On the morning of December 27 last year, Silhesha Chantel Sutherland was found dead in her bathroom at the house she shared with partner Marc Scott.

The couple had been drinking the night before with their friend Tom Benson at their home in Bamber Bridge, reports LancsLive.

However, a post-mortem toxicology test found only a small amount of alcohol in the 22-year-old's system.

The mum to Aliyah and Hugo had complained of stomach pains in the months leading up to her death, but an experienced Home Office pathologist was unable to find a cause of death, it was heard at an inquest at Preston Coroner's Court yesterday (Friday 2 July).

Area Coroner James Newman read out the findings of Dr Alison Armour who carried out an “in-depth” post mortem after Miss Sunderland’s death.

“There was no evidence trauma or injury, nothing significant internally, no damage to the heart, no vomit in her airways, the bladder was normal and although there was a little bit of blood in the abdominal cavity but Dr Armour says that because of her age and general good health it was such a small amount that there is no reason it could have caused her death,” the coroner said.

“Ultimately Dr Armour says she doesn’t know what caused her death.”

Tragic Miss Sutherland, a trainee accountant, had gone to bed at 5am with partner Mr Scott, the inquest heard.

When he woke at 11am to find her not in bed with him, he went to look for her and found her in the bathroom.

Despite extensive attempts to resuscitate Miss Sunderland by Mr Scott, she was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Mr Scott, who had been preparing to propose to Miss Sunderland, said he “kept trying and trying” CPR and asked if there was anything more he could have done to save her.

“Whatever happened to Silhesha was a sudden and catastrophic event,” the coroner replied.

“I don’t think she would have known anything at all about it.”

After Miss Sunderland's death her mum Vicky described her as a "kind-hearted girl" and "brilliant mum" to her two-year-old twins.

Paying tribute to his girlfriend at the time Mr Scott said: "Just like her name, she was one in a million, there was no-one else like her."

Detective Inspector Steve Monk from Lancashire Police said he had attended the couple’s home but said there was no signs of trauma or violence and added: “Nothing that raised my suspicions at all.”

Dr Penny Parr, Miss Sunderland’s GP at Bolton Community Practice, told the family it was possible that she died as a result of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome and advised relatives to request an ECG screening to check for any disturbances in their hearts’ electrical conduction and distribution.

Dr Parr said Miss Sunderland, who was born in Bolton, had visited the surgery in March complaining of abdominal pains but blood tests and an ultrasound found no abnormalities.

In his conclusion the coroner said Miss Sunderland died of natural causes.

“The post mortem could find no cause of death and an unnatural cause was ruled out so the only possibility appears to be an unidentified medical condition,” he added.
