Harry would have been ‘sad’ at seeing Kate’s engagement on birthday, expert says

A royal commentator has claimed Prince Harry would have desperately wanted to carry out a recent Kate Middleton engagement – and may even have been a better choice.

Harry served in the Army for 10 years, undertaking two tours in Afghanistan, and maintained a number of military titles and roles while in the Royal Family.

But, after stepping back as a senior royal and moving to the US with wife Meghan Markle in 2020, these were stripped and handed to other members of the Firm.

And so the sight of sister-in-law Kate meeting with soldiers at RAF Brize Norton may have "touched" the Duke of Sussex and made him sad, according to the Daily Mail's diarist Charlotte Griffiths and editor Richard Eden.

Speaking on the Mail’s Palace Confidential podcast, Charlotte suggested: “We know that that’s the kind of thing that Harry still wishes he was doing, because he said, ‘I want to carry on doing military commitments with the Royal Family’.

“And he’ll be saying, ‘look it’s not my fault, it’s the Royal Family and the men in suits who didn’t let me carry on doing stuff like this’.”

She noted that recent events in Afghanistan, where the Taliban recently regained control of government, would have made a non-appearance even more difficult for the Duke of Sussex.

“I think it will really touch him,” she suggested. “Especially because it was an Afghanistan-related thing and he obviously went to Afghanistan.

“I think he’ll be thinking, ‘more fool you, men in suits, because I could have been doing that and I have a genuine connection with Afghanistan and you could have been using me, but you didn’t’.

“I know Kate’s brilliant, but she didn’t serve so he would have been a better choice, I would have thought."

The Mail’s Diary Editor Richard Eden agreed, though claimed he was relieved to see the Duchess of Cambridge out on royal duties once more.

“It’s great to see her back at work and carrying out these types of duties”, he stressed.

“I think there’s something – like the Queen – something reassuring about seeing her about and doing these roles again.

“Yes, obviously it would be nice to have Harry, but I think when he sees these types of images, he probably feels a bit of sadness about it himself."
