Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Netflix documentary was released on Thursday (December 8) to a wave of controversy, with one moment grabbing viewers' attention.

The first episode of the six-part series saw the Duke and Duchess of Sussex show their son, Archie, a picture of the late Princess Diana, while Harry narrates the scene.

Meghan could be heard saying: "Hey, Grandma, Yeah. That's your Grandma Diana."

Meanwhile, Harry said: "So much of what Meghan is, and how she is, is so similar to my mum.

"She has the same compassion, she has the same empathy, she has the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.

But some viewers were unsure about the scene, with royal expert Kinsey Schofield noting that the private moment with Princess Diana's photo could have been shared with family, rather than with fans.

"Harry and Meghan described the photo of Diana in Archie’s room during the Oprah interview,' Schofield told the Daily Star.

"That kind of felt sacred and morbid [because] William has never stepped foot in that house. [He] hardly knows his niece and nephew.

"It feels strange to share a moment like that with strangers when you know how strained the family is and how they would be seeing a private moment like that for the first time with us."

At home, viewers were divided over the intimate moment and took to social media to share their thoughts.

One wrote of the scene: "This is so unsettling," while another added: "How utterly vile to allow such a private moment to be shared in such a manipulative manner."

But others had a more forgiving stance, with one Sussex fan commenting: "I broke down and ugly cried at that point […] Diana would have been awesome with her grandchildren."

Another said: "Lovely and heartbreaking at the same time."

Princess Diana featured heavily in the first three episodes of the docuseries, the finale of which will be released on December 15.

The first episode saw Harry describe watching his mum struggle in the limelight, comparing her experiences in the Firm to Meghan's.

"I accept that there'll be people around the world who fundamentally disagree with what I've done and how I've done it, but I knew that I had to do everything I could to protect my family.

"Especially after what happened to my mum."

Fans' hearts were broken when the now-38-year-old prince described losing his mother at the age of just 12.

"When my mum died, we had two hats to wear," Harry said.

"One was two grieving sons wanting to cry, grieve, and process that grief because of losing our mum.

"And two was the royal hat, no emotion, get out there, meet people, shake hands."

Describing his choice to step down as a working royal, he said: "I didn't want history to repeat itself."
