Harrowing Kobe Bryant helicopter crash ‘dead sound’ 911 call released

Chilling audio of 911 calls made to Los Angeles police about the helicopter crash that claimed the life of NBA star Kobe Bryant and his daughter have been released.

Numerous callers rang officers claiming to hear “a dead sound” and seeing flames after the helicopter smashed into hills near the California city.

Some callers claimed to have heard or seen an aircraft plunge into the Calabasas hills at about 9.45am (local time) on January 26.

A man was walking on a trail when he heard Bryant’s helicopter go down and mistook it for a plane.

He told the 911 operator: “I can hear this plane, I think it was in the clouds.”

The man added: “We couldn’t see it – and then we just heard a boom, and a dead sound. Then I can see the flames.”

Another caller said: “We heard it, and now I’m looking at the flames.”

NBA legend Kobe and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were killed instantly in the horrific crash.

Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva said nine people, including the pilot, died in the disaster.

The emergencies were quick to the scene but nobody on board survived.

Bryant is survived by his wife Vanessa, who is believed to have not been on board.

They have three other daughters – Natalia and Bianca and newborn Capri.

Having announced his plans to retire in 2015, NBA commissioner Adam Silver called Bryant "one of the greatest players in the history of our game".
