A half-naked protester has been detained after "posing as Christ" and enacting his own crucifixion outside a Russian security service building.

The activist was arrested after the dramatic incident where he stood outside the headquarters of the FSB, which is mainly responsible for the internal security of Russia.

Pavel Krisevich, 20, stood outside the building in a "loincloth and sneakers" while a fire started beneath a huge cross, to resemble the crucifixion.

According to reports, during the incident which took place on Lubyanka Square, the activist was also seen burning volumes of legal cases against alleged political prisoners in Russia.

"Pavel was detained at Lubyanka near the FSB building, while posing as Christ,” said lawyer Sergei Telnov.

“I don't know yet which police station he has been taken to.”

A law enforcement source said: "A young man wearing a bloody loincloth and sneakers started a fire, climbed a stool behind it and tied a big cross to his hands to enact crucifixion.

“The man was detained.”

The activist – unhurt in the stunt – is known for stunts in support of “political prisoners” in Russia and neighbouring Belarus.

Later reports said he was being held at nearby Kitai Gorod police station, and is expected to serve up to 30 days detention for the protest.

The headquarters of Vladimir Putin's FSB counterintelligence service are in a former tsarist-erainsurance company building long associated with the repressive KGB in the Soviet era.

The scenes come amid concerns surrounding President Vladimir Putin's health.

However, the Kremlin have rejected claims Mr Putin, 68, may have Parkinson’s disease and will soon give up his position.

Authorities in Russia have dismissed suggestions Mr Putin has Parkinson’s as “absolute nonsense” and assured media “everything is fine” with the President.

Kremlin spokesman Dimtry Peskov, said the report, which was picked up by UK tabloids was false.

He said: "It's absolute nonsense.

"Everything is fine with the president."
