A gunman has been arrested outside US vice president Kamala Harris's house.

Paul Murray, 31, from San Antonio in Texas, US, was caught with a rifle and high-capacity bullets at the Naval Observatory mansion in Washington DC at 12.15pm yesterday.

The US Secret Service detained Murray outside the property following a tipoff by police in Texas.

During his arrest, Metropolitan Police Department officers discovered a rifle and ammunition in his vehicle, the New York Post reports.

Murray was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, carrying a rifle or shotgun outside of a business, possession of unregistered ammunition, and possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device, police said.

Officers refused to disclose why Murray was there, why he had the rifle and what his intentions were.

Whether Harris was at the mansion at the time of Murray's arrested is unclear.

Security around US politicians has been stepped up in recent months in the wake of the Capitol riots in January.

Four people died, including a woman shot by police, and more than 50 were arrested when supporters of Donald Trump stormed the US Capitol Building after he lost the presidential election to Democrat rival Joe Biden in November last year.

During the violence, politicians were targeted and pipe bombs were found outside the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee.

Police also discovered a cooler inside a vehicle which had a "long gun" and a Molotov cocktail on the grounds of the US Capitol.

At the time, Washington DC Police Chief Robert Contee said police shot the woman as the mob tried to break through a barricaded door in the Capitol building, where police were armed on the other side. She died later from the gunshot wound in hospital.

The incident sparked global condemnation and led to Trump being impeached for a record second time during his turbulent four years in office.

The former US president, who branded the case a "witch hunt," was acquitted of "incitement of insurrection" at his trial in February after being accused of stirring up tensions between his fans and other politicians riot during a speech.
