Grace Millane killer Jesse Kempson’s rape victim haunted by ‘angry popping eyes’

A victim raped by backpacker Grace Millane's brutal killed told him in court how she used to be haunted by his "eyes popping out of" his head and "staring" at her in "anger."

The British woman kept her rape a secret until she recognised Jesse Kempson from media coverage the day he was charged with the murder of Grace Millane.

Kempson was jailed for life with a non-parole period of 17-years for murdering Grace while on a boozy Tinder date in Auckland, New Zealand.

He initially claimed he had killed Grace by accident during sex, but evidence later revealed Kempson carried out a number of internet searches before dialling 111, including how to dispose of a body.

The rape of Kempson's first victim came months earlier after the woman refused to have sex with him after he bought her drinks and dinner.

In a statement read to the court at his sentencing, the victim revealed she had woken up "crying and screaming" terrified he would one day track her down.

"Every time I went to sleep, I'd see your eyes popping out of your head, staring at me in anger," she said.

Vowing never to say Kempson's name aloud, she kept the rape a secret and with support from counsellors and her partner came forward and recovered.

It was heard the victim had been in New Zealand for a few weeks before she met Kempson and he took her back to a hotel.

Kempson then attempted to have sex with her against her will but was unable to leave because she had left her keys in a bar.

She told police she had climbed into bed fully clothed before Kempson made his way on top of her and raped her.

The woman said: "I was in the room physically but I don’t remember what I did. I was just there.

"My brain just won’t let me remember. I’m sorry. It’s like I was just frozen.

"I didn’t want to be there, I was still crying. I don’t know how that wasn’t obvious."
