GMB weatherman Alex Beresford says cousin's knife killer has also ruined his OWN life

GOOD Morning Britain's weatherman Alex Beresford today said his cousin's killer has also ruined his own life after the fatal stabbing.

He appeared on the show this morning saying "nobody wins, everybody loses" after Nathan Armstrong died on Saturday.

The tragic death happened days after Alex gave an impassioned speech during a debate on longer prison sentences deterring people carrying knives.

Still reeling from the family tragedy he said: "It's been an emotional rollercoaster.

"No one would have expected this, especially after I spoke out – you couldn't make it up.

"It's come as a big surprised that it's happened to Nathan as he's 29, he's not in a gang, he went to university, he's a big guy."

After Piers said "it was a cruel wicked irony, it showed that it can happen to anybody", Alex added: "It is about the environment, and not just one environment, it's about changing everything."

"There are some people that will be deterred by a bigger sentence but for lots of boys committing these crimes they don't care.

"If you're prepared to pick up a knife and stab someone or risk your life you are prepared to give up your life so it's not a deterrent.

"Knives, you can walk into your kitchen and pick one up.

No one would have expected this, especially after I spoke out – you couldn't make it up.

"It's the other side of it, the other person that has done this to my cousin, he's also ruined his life.

"The ripple affect goes wider, it affects his family too and that's why we need to fix this problem, both sides of it.

"Nobody wins, everybody loses in these situations.

"Until he's [the knifeman] found we don't know a great deal, because Nathan is not here to give his side of the story."

Nathan was killed in the early hours of Saturday on the same street where Crimewatch host Jill Dando was fatally shot in 1999.

CCTV caught Nathan — who was nicknamed “BFG” for his 6ft 7in frame — arguing with two men in the middle of posh Gowan Avenue, where houses sell for £1.5million.

Nathan lived with his mum 100 yards away in Fulham, South-West London.

Alex, 38, paid tribute to the "bright young man" earlier in the week.

In a statement, Mr Beresford said: "I’m deeply saddened to confirm my cousin Nathaniel lost his life.

"We were all so shocked to receive this news yesterday and our thoughts right now are with his mum, his brother and sisters.

"Nathaniel was a bright young man with his whole life ahead of him and this tragedy is yet one more example of a needless life lost to knife crime."

Alex, who starred in Dancing on Ice last year, hit the headlines on March 5 when he yelled across ITV’s breakfast show studio to interrupt a panel debating whether there should be more jails.

He shouted: “Prison doesn’t work though. It does not work.

"I’ve grown up in some of these communities you guys are talking about. Some of these boys don’t fear prison.

“If you don’t change the environment you won’t change anything and that’s the key thing.”

No-one has been arrested in connection with the attack.

Any witnesses, or anyone with information, is asked to call the police incident room on 0208 358 0100.

To remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
