A 13-year-old girl is fighting for her life with almost 90 percent of her body burned after her ex-boyfriend set her on fire because she ended their relationship. 

Wilson Javier Meléndez Bonilla, 19, entered the girl’s home in the southwestern Puerto Rican town of Cabo Rojo, on Saturday night, and covered her body with gasoline before setting her on fire. 

The victim’s mother, Nanette Martínez Camacho, 34, suffered minor burns to her face and arms when she tried to save her daughter. 

The girl’s nine-year-old brother also was burned during the attack – his injuries are not life threatening.

The young girl was first taken to Hospital De La Concepción in San German before doctors stabilized her and transferred her to the University Pediatric Hospital in San Juan. 

Meléndez Bonilla, who was still at the home when cops arrived to arrest him, has been charged with seven counts, including three attempted murder charges. 

He was transferred to a jail in Ponce after he failed to meet a $3.5million bail bond imposed by a judge in Mayagüez.

According to Puerto Rican news outlet Isla Oeste, Martínez Camacho said her daughter and Meléndez Bonilla were friends and she was unaware if they were involved in a relationship.

Sergeant Joel Ayala Del Valle said that Meléndez Bonilla dumped gasoline over the victim while she was sleeping on a couch and set her on fire.

El Vocero reported that Meléndez Bonilla told investigators he met the girl six months ago when she was just 12 and started attending a middle school in her neighborhood. 

The young girl called their relationship off a month ago and Meléndez Bonilla said he had gone a month without seeing her.

While holding back tears, the suspect’s mother, Keilla Bonilla, told WOLE 12 that the girl’s parents should also be held liable for the disturbing attack.

‘They knew that he slept with her in the house,’ Bonilla said.

‘The situation was addressed to them many times… He left my house two months to be with her.’

The distraught mother added that she pleaded with her son to stop seeing the victim because she was underage.

‘I am very sorry about what is happening,’ Bonilla said. 

‘I am a mother and I know that the girl is suffering. I ask God for the girl to get better.’
