Officers said were met with a "challenging situation which involved a number of young people". They quickly defused the incident to ensure the safety of everyone.
As part of their enquiries, five young people were identified as primarily being involved and are currently under investigation.
At this stage, it is being treated as a hate crime. No one suffered any serious injuries.
A spokesperson for the force said: "We’re working with our partners to ensure the welfare of everyone involved in the incident.
"As part of that, there has been a visible policing presence in the area this evening and that will continue overnight and in the coming days.
"The investigation is being led by Loughton CID. We’re also aware of videos of the incident circulating on social media and we would ask people not to share those out of respect for everyone involved.
"We would also ask anyone who does have footage of the incident to get in touch to share it with us.
