Girl, 2, dies at Christmas market after being crushed by falling ice sculpture

A young child has died after being crushed by an ice sculpture at a Christmas market in Luxembourg.

The two-year-old girl was struck while visiting the Place Guillaume at about 8pm yesterday.

Eyewitnesses say the ice sculpture collapsed near an ice rink and shattered into pieces which injured the child.

It is understood that the youngster died at the scene.

Place Guillaume II was closed off entirely in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Police are now investigating and are asking witness to come forward with more information.

Luxembourg's Prime Minister – Xavier Bettel  – wrote on Twitter that 'words cannot describe how tragic the incident was'.
