A 12-YEAR-old girl was gang raped by her uncle and three brothers before being strangled by her aunt and then beheaded with a sickle, cops say.

The girl’s headless body was found dumped in fields outside her village in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, following the slaying which is the latest sex attack to shock India.

Her severed head was found around between 50 to 100m away.

Police have charged the uncle, aunt and three of her brothers – but one of the boys has fled.

The girl’s parents started a desperate search after the girl did not return from school – but her body was found on March 14 – the same day she was killed.

She was allegedly taken by one of her brothers to their uncle's home when she was returning home after exams.

The uncle and her two brothers allegedly gang raped her and when she threatened to go to the police, her aunt allegedly strangled her.

She was beheaded and dumped in the fields, police said, according to NDTV.

Senior police officer Amit Sanghi told NDTV that the post mortem and a medical report revealed that the girl was raped.

The murder weapon – a sickle – and blood-stained clothes were also found.

"Our two senior officers collected all evidence and recorded the statements of the family members,” Mr Sanghi said.

“When everything was pieced together, we found that she was raped and murdered by her brothers and uncle.”

The uncle has been accused of trying to mislead investigators.

Police grew suspicious when he claimed that a neighbour had killed the girl.

Rage at such brutal attacks, and the government's failure to address the culture that allows them, have rocked India since the gang rape and murder of Jyoti Singh on a Delhi bus in 2012.
