A young girl whose burglary career began aged 11 has admitted to ransacking three homes over 12 days in a summer holiday crime spree.

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, targeted three homes in just 12 days from late July to August last year, in the resort town Southend-on-Sea, Essex.

She appeared at Basildon Magistrates’ Court earlier this month, which was sitting as the South Essex Youth Court, and admitted to three counts of burglary.  

Despite the seriousness of the crimes, her young age meant she was referred the Southend youth offender panel on a six month contract.

During that time she will be expected to work with officials and social workers to keep out of trouble.

Her mother was ordered to pay £250 compensation to the first victim, and £40 to the third victim.

The young girl broke into a home in Southend, on the 4th of August where she stole jewellery, electrical goods and a sum of cash. 

She targeted another home on August 7, where she swiped cash, and between July 30 and August 10, she broke into a third property where she stole a knife, jewellery and a rail card.

The girl was arrested in October last year as part of a joint operation between Essex Police, the City of London police, the British Transport Police and the Metropolitan Police Service targeting burglars, thieves and robbers. 

Speaking at the time, Chief Supt Andy Mariner said: ‘We understand the impact these crimes have on victims not only in the immediate aftermath, but for months and sometimes, years after too.

‘This shows just how important it is that we find those responsible for these crimes and hold them for their actions.’
