Giant python rescued after escaping and getting wedged in family’s kitchen door

A gigantic python had to be rescued by firefighters when it slithered out of its cage and somehow managed to get stuck underneath a kitchen door in the middle of the night.

The 3ft-long snake, called Ellie, "didn’t throw a hissy fit" and cooperated with the rescue effort, according to Dorset fire service.

A video shows firefighters use special equipment to take the door off its hinges and release the snake at the family home in Bournemouth.

The python is then returned to her grateful owners Sophie, 16, and Grace, eight, who stroke the snake while mum Jenny thanks the fire service for coming out and helping with their unusual problem.

Talking to the camera Jenny says: "I rung them and explained my situation.

"If they had said no it’s not something they would have helped out with then obviously we would have sorted something else out.

"But they were quite happy to come out and assist and I can’t thank them enough."

She added: "It is animal welfare so if it’s a dog or a cat or a snake now, they all need the same rescue."

Jenny said she bought the python along with two corn snakes during the lockdown.

Ellie was not harmed at all while being retrieved from the door – but is now thought to be pregnant.

Springbourne Fire Station tweeted an image of the python stuck under the door, writing: "1.58 am Blue Watch Springbourne sent to rescue a pregnant Python stuck under a kitchen door!!!

"Carefully released using our hydraulic door opener and hooligan tool."
