A man nearly died after he was the victim of a random Reservoir Dogs-style attack in which a gang tried to slice off his ear as a trophy.

Andrew Taylor, 37, was out with his friend Rhys Pepper, 27, when the pair were confronted by a group of around 20 people in Cornwall.

They attacked Mr Taylor with a knife, leaving him covered in blood with a wound just millimetres away from a major artery.

The wound was millimetres away from a major artery and was left needing stitches following the attack

Mr Taylor, who runs a martial arts equipment business, says he doesn’t know why he and his friend were attacked but believes they wanted his ear as some kind of memento.

He was left with multiple cuts needing stitches following the attack outside The Red Lion in St Columb Major in Cornwall, and he fears going back to the town where his family has lived for 15 years.

Mr Pepper, a heavy plant operator from Plymouth, Devon, broke his nose and required surgery to rebuild his face.

Mr Taylor said: ‘We just sat in the Red Lion pub and got a few drinks. Then it was time for the pub to close.

‘As we walked to the entrance, everyone else had vacated.

‘Then, someone rugby tackled Rhys from inside the pub, out into the car park, and then they all descended on him.

‘We reckon there were 15 to 20 people, it wasn’t just men, there were females there as well. I didn’t see any of this because I went to pick up my shopping.

‘Then as I walked out the door, bang, someone tried to cut my ear off.

‘It just felt like a punch, it didn’t feel like a knife. He tried to chop my ear off.

A staff member of the Red Lion pub has been accused of turning a blind eye to the attack and the pub has refused to comment on the attack

‘I turned to the member of staff holding the door open and said, ‘what the f*ck have we done to deserve this’?’

Mr Taylor believes they may have been attacked because the gang thought they weren’t local.

He claims that after the first blow, a staff member closed the side door and locked it, instead of trying to help.

He added: ‘I then knocked one guy out, and he’s dropped. More then descended to me away from Rhys.

‘I’ve managed to keep them all in front of me, but Rhys had them all around him. In the lane, I took a second knife strike. Then it started to really bleed out.

‘Rhys was still scrapping, trying to fend for himself. All we were thinking about was trying to get out of there.

‘Rhys managed to join me, and then they stopped. We think it’s because of the CCTV camera.’

Mr Taylor sustained a swollen face, and a large 2.5cm cut on his ear and neck.

He added: ‘One wound was about 2cm away from the main artery, I was that close to dying. I think they wanted to cut my ear off as a trophy.

Devon and Cornwall Police are appealing for witnesses for the incident which happened on February 23

‘They confirmed it was a knife at the hospital. Rhys had to have his face completely rebuilt and fixed, and he had a gash over one of his eyes.’

The pair recognised some of the attackers and have given names to the police.

Mr Taylor, who isn’t confident of getting justice, said: ‘If nothing gets done, am I safe to go to the Co-op?

‘After it happened I walked around St Columb, and I was looking at every person, wondering if I might be attacked.

‘You just don’t know. They all know me, but I don’t know all of them. There were just too many.’

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened on Saturday, February 23 between 11.30pm and 11.50pm.

Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that investigations are continuing and that no arrests have been made at this time.

The Red Lion did not comment on the incident because of the ongoing police investigation.
