Hong Kong anniversary: Six months since 'million-man' march

At least two deaths, more than 10,000 tear gas canisters fired and almost 6,000 arrests.

It has been six months since a mass anti-government march in Hong Kong which organisers say attracted more than one million people onto the streets.

Since then, the movement has broadened – with calls for greater democracy and an end to police brutality.

Biles almost swept this year’s competition in Stuttgart, Germany, winning five out of a possible six gold medals (she finished fifth on the uneven bars). Her world championship medals, 19 of them gold, give her two more than Vitaly Scherbo of Belarus, who held the record for more than two decades. Including the Olympics, Biles ranks third all-time internationally with 30 medals, and she’s still the most decorated American gymnast in history.

This year the International Gymnastics Federation also officially named two skills after her: a double-twisting, double-backflip balance beam dismount and a double backflip with three twists in the floor exercise. (There’s also a Biles vault and a second Biles floor move.) She’ll lead the U.S. women’s team next year at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo—her second games and, she says, her last.

Buddhist nationalist group Bodu Bala Sena, which means Army of Buddhist Power, is accused of inciting hate and taking part in violent attacks on Sri Lanka’s minority Muslim and Christian communities in recent years.

Sri Lanka has suffered decades of religious and ethnic violence.

The newly-elected president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa has promised to unite the country.

Yet, there remains deep distrust among the country’s minority groups that voted overwhelmingly against him.

BEIRUT, Dec 8 (Reuters) – Lebanese businessman Samir Khatib said on Sunday there was a consensus for nominating Saad al-Hariri as prime minister again to form a new government, speaking after a meeting with Lebanon’s top Sunni Muslim religious leader.

The statement spelt the end of Khatib’s candidacy for the post which is reserved for a Sunni Muslim in Lebanon’s sectarian power-sharing system. Hariri quit as prime minister on Oct. 29, prompted by protests against the ruling elite.

KHARTOUM (Reuters) – Sudan has 5,000 troops operating in Yemen, down from a peak of 15,000, Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok said on Sunday.

Briefing journalists on his return from Washington, Hamdok said there had been no discussions during his visit about withdrawing the troops. Sudanese troops have been deployed as part of a Saudi-led alliance that intervened in Yemen in 2015 against the Houthi movement that controls the capital.

‘Frozen II’ and ‘Knives Out’ Hold Sway During Sleepy Weekend

Walt Disney Co.’s “Frozen II” and Lionsgate’s “Knives Out” stayed atop the box office over a slow weekend, as holiday shopping takes priority.

The Disney sequel drew in $34.7 million this weekend, according to data Sunday from the studio and researcher Comscore Inc. “Knives Out” was well behind with $14.2 million.

        • It’s the third second straight weekend at the top for “Frozen 2.” The blockbuster set a Thanksgiving record just shy of $86 million last weekend, beating the previous $74.2 million mark set by “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”
        • “Playmobil,” a fresh attempt to turns toys into Hollywood fortunes, didn’t fare as well. The animated movie suffered from poor reviews, with just 20% of critics tracked by Rotten Tomatoes praising the film. The film features the iconic plastic figures created in the 1970s by German entrepreneur Horst Brandstätter’s toy company.
        • Another holdover, the racing drama starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon “Ford v Ferrari,” landed in third place. Universal’s “Queen & Slim” was fourth, and a Sony Corp. picture about TV’s Mister Rogers starring Tom Hanks was fifth.
