Free bikes to be given out by NHS to FAT people in health bid
The first scheme of its kind is being piloted by the Cardiff and Vale health board.
It aims to help tackle the local population’s weight problem after 54% of residents were found to be either obese or overweight.
Available at two practice’s in the Welsh capital, it will see doctors prescribing patients a six-month membership of bike sharing scheme nextbike.
The health board said patients will be given a code which allows them unlimited free 30-minute hires. Local GP Dr Karen Pardy said: “While we are aware of the many benefits of exercise for our patients, people are sometimes reluctant to engage.
“Nextbike on prescription allows people to have a go at cycling around Cardiff and realise how this can help to support their overall wellbeing.”
The nextbike scheme was launched in the city in May last year and the firm said it now has 500 bikes at 27 sites, with about 10,000 journeys made each week.
If successful, the free biking scheme could be rolled out city wide.
