France in flames with riots erupting after policeman ‘executes’ driver

Riots have reportedly broken out in a Paris suburb after a police officer was accused of “executing” a teenage motorist in cold blood.

Reports suggest the officer said, “I’m going to lodge a bullet in your head” moments before the incident. A video believed to be of the killing has emerged on social media, showing the 17-year-old – thought to be of Algerian descent – being pulled over.

It is thought the youngster was stopped for a traffic violation. The Daily Mail reported that he was identified as Nael, a delivery driver, and was arrested at the scene in Nanterre.

Youths then began to pour into the streets, setting fire to bins, prompting the FrenchInterior Minister Gerald Darmanin to appeal for calm.

He told the National Assembly in Paris that the images posted on social media were “extremely shocking and worrying” and urged people to “respect the grief of the family and the presumption of innocence of the police”.

With the violence intensifying across the area, police in Nanterre reported nine arrests by 10pm. A Paris police spokesman told the Mail: “There are mobs setting fire to cars and shooting firework rockets at officers.

“Nine people are in custody, mainly for public order offences.”

Local families held protests outside the local police HQ. Videos on social media showed people throwing firecrackers and smashing up bus stops, with officers responding by hurling tear gas and dispersion grenades.

One clip appeared to show a young woman shouting, “I hate France” as an officer mutters “return to Africa”. Prosecutors were said to be investigating a police officer “for murder”.

The victim, identified only as Nael M, was pronounced dead shortly after 9am, around half an hour after being shot. He had been driving a yellow Mercedes AMG.

A video from the incident showed the vehicle stopped with the sunroof open, before it appeared to edge towards the officers. The policeman was then said to have threatened the driver.

The driver restarted the car and the police officer was believed to have opened fire.

Nanterre mayor Patrick Jarry said he was “shocked” by the video images and passed his “sincere condolences to the boy’s mother”.

National police have opened an investigation into the officer, while regional police were looking into an allegation that the driver failed to stop and attempted to kill a person in authority.

Paris police chief Laurent Nunez said the incidents “raises questions” and claimed the officer could have “felt threatened”. But the boy’s lawyer told television reporters, “this is a long way from any kind of legitimate defence”.
