Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has died aged 91, state television said.

He had undergone surgery just weeks prior to his death, it was reported.

Known as the country's fourth president, Mubarak ruled Egypt for 30 years before being ousted on February 11, 2011 as a result of the Arab Spring revolution.

He was jailed for years after the uprising, but was freed in 2017 after being acquitted of most charges.

Mubarak’s iron-fist reign was marked by totalitarian laws which gave the state powers to conduct random arrests and conduct surveillance of citizens.

He used Egypt’s Central Security Forces and State Security Investigations Service to suppress opposition to ensure his 30-year rule and was accused of rigging elections.

Despite assassination attempts on his life, he became an effective "Pharaoh", presiding over decades of stagnation and oppression.

The Arab Spring uprising, which saw 18 days of protest in Egypt finally brought down his autocratic regime. The protests, began on January 25, 2011, dubbed Egypt's 'Day of Revolt'.

The former president's death comes as the two sons of former Egyptian president were acquitted on Saturday of illicit share trading during the sale of a bank four years before the 2011 uprising that ended their father's 30-year autocratic rule.

Alaa and Gamal Mubarak and seven others had faced charges of illegally profiting from the process of selling the Al Watany Bank of Egypt to the National Bank of Kuwait in 2007.

Mubarak was freed in 2017 after being cleared of charges of ordering the killing protesters during the uprising.
