Foot-long stick removed from man’s throat after voices told him to swallow it
Medics have removed a foot-long stick from a man’s oesophagus after he visited a hospital in Guatemala, Central America, complaining of intense stomach pain. Doctors found the top of the stick poking out of his gullet, and the pain was caused by splinters digging into his lower stomach and tube’s sides. The man, 52, who was not named, was told to swallow it by “voices in his head”.

As reported by the Mail Online, the doctors tried to pull the stick back up through the man’s throat but had to remove it surgically by cutting a hole in the patient’s stomach. Medics first tried to remove the stick with a loop clamp, which is a long, slender shaft with a wire loop attached, but the strategy failed.
After sedating the patient, they made a small incision in his stomach, in a procedure medically termed a gastronomy. The stick was then slowly pulled out of his throat through his stomach.
Doctors at Hospital Roosevelt in Guatemala City, the nation’s capital, had carried out scans to estimate the size of the stick, finding that it was a foot long and about 0.8 inches wide.
Miraculously, he had still been able to breathe because the stick had descended below the opening in the oesophagus that connects the windpipe and lungs.

The patient suffered no long-term damage from the incident but was sent for a mental health evaluation after surgery and he was later diagnosed with schizophrenia, a mental health condition that can lead to mood, behaviour, and hallucinations disturbances.
Previous incidents have included people swallowing everything from plastic bottles to spanners. In India, a 55-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh, also went into hospital complaining of stomach pain and had swallowed a plastic bottle, which had to be removed from his body.
