Fire crews rescue four Devon cows from a slurry pit

Up to their NECKS in it! Rescuers haul four cows to safety after they got stuck in huge lake of SLURRY

  • The four cows wandered into a slurry pit in Tetcott, Devon on Monday 
  • Three units of Devon Fire Service raced to the scene to help with the rescue
  • Fire officers used special mats to avoid sinking into the large slurry pit 
  • A spokesman said without the rescuers the four cows would have died  

Four cows were dragged to safety by rescuers after getting stuck neck deep – in slurry.

Fire crews from Holsworthy and Barnstaple, Devon were called into action on Monday to rescue the heifers that had got into a sticky situation.

The cows at a farm in Tetcott had got stuck in a slurry pit.

Barnstaple’s special rescue team was called to the address after a fire engine from Holsworthy and another rescue team from Camels Head.

Four cows got stuck up to their necks in a slurry pit on a farm in Devon on Monday night and needed to be rescued by the fire brigade

Special mats were used to allow the rescuers to ‘float’ over the slurry, so they could tie the 

Using special water equipment, mud mats and special lifting slings, the crews were able to return the livestock to safety before an extensive clean-up.

A statement from Barnstaple fire station said: ‘Without rescuing they stood no chance of surviving.

‘After a long, hard and very messy time, Green Watch managed to get all four cows out.

‘Using special lifting slings and the farmer’s telehandler, the cows were dug out and lifted to safety.

‘Then it was back to the station for a huge clean up.’

Three teams of firefighters were involved in the operation to save the four cows 

According to Barnstable Fire Station, without the rescue teams, the four cows would have had ‘no chance of surviving’
