A female prison officer narrowly avoided going to jail herself after admitting to sending ‘highly sexualised’ messages to a convicted killer behind bars.
Cardiff Crown Court heard that Savannah Dean, 24, became ‘over-friendly’ with inmate Michael Wheeler, 25, and showered him with notes, cards and photographs.
Wheeler was serving time at Parc Prison in Bridgend, south Wales, for causing death by dangerous driving.
The court heard their messages were ‘highly sexualised’ and referenced kissing and other acts they wanted to perform.
Prosecutors said Wheeler made 29 calls to Dean, who turned up to court wearing leather trousers and a top that read ‘Always Fabulous’, between January 24 and February 4 this year.
The court heard the calls were made to ‘Alex’ – a false name to hide her identity.
Wheeler’s cell was searched and a box was found containing notes, cards, and photographs from the defendant.
Dean resigned from her role after her relationship was uncovered by prison authorities and made full admissions.
She said she was going through a tough time in her personal life and accepted she had ‘overstepped the mark’.

Dean, from Swansea, admitted misconduct in public office by having an inappropriate relationship with a prisoner.
She was sentenced to six months in prison suspended for a year.
Judge Michael Fitton said: ‘Misconduct in public office is a very serious matter and such behaviour undermines public confidence in the prison system.
‘It was unsettling for other prisoners, who see someone receiving different treatment, and impacts on the work of other prison officers.’
The judge noted there was highly sexualised communication but no evidence of sexual contact beyond perhaps a kiss.
Dean was also ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and must undergo 14 days of rehabilitation.
