Father Christmas assaulted in his grotto at Tesco store in Liverpool

Father Christmas was allegedly assaulted by a shoplifter at a Tesco supermarket in Liverpool at the weekend.

Police were scrambled to reports of two shoplifters at the busy store in West Derby on Sunday at around 2pm.

Officers arrived to find one of the thieves had allegedly assaulted a worker dressed up as Father Christmas.

The attack reportedly took place in Santa’s grotto in the store, reports Liverpool Echo.

A Tesco worker confirmed that the worker who was assaulted was dressed up as Santa.

A witness said one of the shoplifters had been shouting at Father Christmas before “attacking him”.

He said: “At around 2pm a man was shouting at Father Christmas who was at the grotto.

"He attacked him and they locked the store and they were rolling around the Tesco."

A spokesman for Merseyside Police later confirmed that one man has been arrested for theft.

The spokesman said: "Police received a call around 2pm to the Tesco on Deysbrook Lane.

"The incident involved two shoplifters and one of the shoplifters assaulted a member of staff.

"One male has been arrested for theft."
