Evil brothers planned to ‘outdo Columbine massacre’ after butchering own family

Two teenage brothers who butchered five members of their own family and stabbed them more than 100 times had planned to shoot up schools in mass killings worse than the infamous Columbine massacre.

Robert Bever was just 18 years old when he and his younger brother Michael, then 16, killed their dad, mum, two brothers and a sister in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma on July 22, 2015.

The now-notorious Bever brothers spared their two-year-old sister but had also tried to murder their 13-year-old sister Crystal by slashing her throat. She miraculously survived her injuries and was able to identify her two brothers as the attackers.

The toddler, who has not been named, and the teen were the only two members of the Bever family to survive and were placed into state custody.

His parents, David, 54, and April, 45, siblings Daniel, 11, Christopher, 10, and Victoria, four, died after suffering more than 100 stab wounds in total.

The tragic case, dubbed the Broken Arrow Killings, has been described as the "worst single criminal event” in the city’s history.

Michael was jailed for life with the possibility of parole, something not afforded to older brother Robert, who will never be freed.

He however admitted that he doesn’t think of his jail time as a punishment.

“When I was younger all I really wanted was one room that I could do everything in and live in all the time and now I have it so it’s actually really easy for me in prison," Robert said.

"I just spend a lot of time in my head and so I’m not really worried about thinking of this as punishment.

"I would have considered the death penalty as punishment, I don’t really consider this as punishment. I consider this as a safety precaution because I’m not a functioning member of society. So I’m okay with it though I try not to think about it too much.”

In a podcast interview, Robert admitted he wanted to become a mass serial killer because he had “never heard of that before” – the murderous plan was to shoot up schools, restaurants and movie theatres and the pair had ideas of matching or even topping the Columbine massacre.

Twelve students and one teacher died at the hands of shooters Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold during the incident at Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999.

At the time, it was America's deadliest school shooting and spawned a number of copycat attempts.

The older Bever brother revealed the plan had started due to feelings of resentment he had towards his parents.

When the pair began to attack the family, their younger brother Daniel called 911 to alert the emergency services and commotion and screams could be heard in the background of the call. When the line went dead, officers were dispatched to the scene.

Bever, who used to write dark poetry and songs about murder and school shootings, claims he is remorseful and regrets his actions and said he thinks about what he did every day.

He added: “I was not really intending for my family to get killed at first.

"They just kind of became the first step in this plot that I was putting together on how I could kill as many people as possible and like set records, horrifying millions of people.

"My idea was I was going to pick restaurants and schools and movie theatres, go and shoot it up, get back in our family vehicle and drive away and become like a serial mass murderer because I’d never heard that before so that's what I was trying to do.”
