EuroMillions winner says ‘wife has already spent it all’ after landing £1m prize

A EuroMillions winner says his wife has spent their entire £1,000,000 fortune in just six months.

Neil and Sue Smart won the EuroMillions UK Millionaire Maker in March earlier this year and it is clear what most of it has already been splashed out on.

The couple wasted no time in swapping their snug terraced home in Seaton, East Devon for a plush £600,000 pad, DevonLive reports.

Neil says they have a luxury cruise lined up for 2022 and he has even treated himself to a new car – even if it was the sensible option.

As they forgot to check their numbers after the draw on Friday, March 5, Neil thought a notification on the National Lottery app two days later was just a scam.

He said: "We found out on the Sunday. My wife works at Tesco petrol station and she had to go to work.

"One of my daughters was upstairs and my son was in bed.

"I thought I’d check to see if I needed to put on a line for next week. When I logged in I immediately saw a message which said, 'Congratulations you’ve won £1m'.

"At first I thought, that seems dodgy so I got my daughter and she said it looked like a scam."

Although Neil had his suspicions, he was not convinced it was a scam as it was on the lottery account.

He said: "I wait until the next day to find out as I needed to ring them. We didn't get much sleep that night!"

Neil said that he went to work the next day as normal, and spoke to Camelot at 9am to receive the news that, yes, he was a millionaire and, after letting Sue know the good news, he went back to work to complete his shift.

It has been a number of months since the family discovered their big win, and Neil has revealed that they have now bought a four-bedroom property.

Jokingly he said: "My wife has spent it all already! I am still working, I'm too young to retire.

"We have now moved around three miles outside of Seaton. We lived in a terrace house but we wanted more room.

"It's got scope, so if one of my parents needed to live with us, so that's what we have done."

Neil says that the family have been quite sensible since winning the money, however they have splashed out on a few luxury buys.

He said: "We bought the house for around £600,000.

"So, £400,000 isn't a lot to live on. The wife has given up work.

"We have put some money away in Premium Bonds and such.

"I bought a new car, a Mazda C-X5. I did look at a Jaguar, but I scaled down as my brain just went, be careful with your money.

"Me and Sue have booked a cruise in 2022 around the Caribbean for a fortnight."

Neil says that the only advice he really has for those who want to win on the Euromillions is that you don't have to play all of the time.

He said: "Some people are religious with it, they do it week in and week out.

"Just do it every now and again like I had done.

"I still play sometimes, I won £2.70 just last week!"

Neil has today joined other local lottery millionaires to clean up a beach in Bude.

The litter pick is made up of a team of National Lottery winners from across the South West, who joined forces with National Lottery-funded The 2 Minute Foundation to help with the Cornish beach clear up after a busy summer of visitors.
