Emory University active shooter alert cleared as cops respond to 'armed person' at nearby Druid Hills school

A UNIVERSITY has been placed on lockdown following reports of an armed person on campus.

In a now-deleted tweet, Atlanta-based Emory University initially alerted students of a reported "active shooter" situation on campus at around 11.45am on Thursday.

"Emory Alert: Active Shooter reported on Emory Main Campus. Police responding," the initial tweet read.

About 20 minutes after the warning was issued, Emory clarified there was no active shooter, and instead, campus police were responding to an "armed subject".

"Emory Alert Police are on scene at Druid Hills HS. Possible armed subject on Emory Campus Shelter in place. We do not have an active shooter on campus," the university said in a follow-up tweet.

The Atlanta Police Department told The US Sun that they're not responding to any reports at the university.

Minutes before Emory sent the Tweet, a DeKalb County Schools spokesperson told 11Alive that Druid Hills High School was on lockdown due to an "unsafe situation."

The high school and the university are about half a mile away from each other.

Emory University has encouraged students and staff to shelter in place until the situation is cleared.

It's unclear why Druid Hill High School has been placed on lockdown.
