France has suffered badly from the coronavirus crisis with more than 28,000 deaths and Mr Macron has been criticised for how he has taken charge. The country has the fourth highest death toll in the world from the deadly virus after the US, the UK and Italy. According to an Odaxa poll, the president’s popularity has fallen despite Prime Minister Edouard Philippe’s remaining steady.

The survey indicates nearly two out of three people, 65 percent, believe Mr Macron’s handling of the crisis has been bad.

The survey was carried out online on May 19 and 20 among 1,004 people aged 18 and over.

An Odaxa poll from April 30-May 5 found 66 percent of French people believe the government failed to rise to the challenge of handling the crisis.

The French government has been criticised for sending out mixed messages on when or whether people should be wearing face masks.

Mr Macron has been accused of low levels of testing compared to other nations, a shortage of medical equipment and other confusing messages.

Last week Mr Macron lost his absolute majority in French parliament as his defectors have demanded more Left-wing policies.

The MPs are not happy with Mr Macron’s grip on decision-making and his pro-business policies.

French health workers have been protesting saying they do not want to go back to how life was before the virus and they demand change.

Health unions have demanded a pay increase, better equipment and a recruitment drive of 10,000 workers.

In the second week of May, France began to ease its lockdown.

Shops reopened, millions of people went back to work and people no longer required travel restrictions to leave their homes.

Gatherings of ten people are now allowed in public places across the country.

Mr Philippe has warned that the French people will need to learn to live with the virus.

He has said social distancing and personal hygiene continue to be of utmost importance.

According to a Harris interactive opinion poll, 51 percent of people in France approved Macron’s initial response to the pandemic in March.
