Eerie London Bridge halted by terror says Star reporter caught up in chaos

London Bridge is eerily quiet with train stations and roads evacuated, and a huge cordon in place.

Two members of the public were killed by a rampaging knifeman who was then shot dead by police shortly before 2pm today.

At present, the scene is packed with commuters, tourists and those wanting to know what happened.

Borough High Street is currently blocked from John Harvard House to Monument as police deal with the incident.

One person who was a short walk away said: "I was visiting my Nan in hospital, we weren’t allowed to leave. The whole hospital was put on lockdown.

"I heard loads of sirens and then heard why happened online."

Commuters are currently being escorted away from the area by police.

The scene resembles London in the early hours in the morning rather than its notoriously busy rush hour.

A street usually packed with traffic has been brought to a standstill as the media and curious onlookers gather in the middle of the road to catch a glimpse of what’s happened.

Despite being rush hour on a Friday evening, with people normally rushing to leave work and traffic being at standstill, the area surrounding Borough station is currently eerily silent.

People are being escorted away from the scene by police.

London Bridge overground and underground stations have reopened following the attack.

Today's atrocities are a chilling reminder of the attack at London Bridge two years ago during the 2017 election campaign which killed eight people.
