Denver police on Monday identified the man suspected of running a red light at high speed and T-boning a car in the Highland Square shopping area, killing the driver of the other vehicle and severely injuring a child.

Police identified the suspect as Patrick Layden, 49, and said he entered the intersection of West 32nd Avenue and North Lowell Boulevard at a high rate of speed just before noon Saturday.

Layden passed another car by crossing double yellow lane lines while traveling down West 32nd Avenue before entering the intersection, according to a probable cause statement from police.

The force of the crash pushed the two cars into seven other vehicles parked at the intersection, according to the statement.

The driver of the second car died at the scene and the child passenger was taken to a hospital, where they remained Monday in critical condition. Denver police said in a statement that the child is expected to survive. The man who died has not publicly been identified.

The probable cause statement does not indicate whether police believe Layden was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.

Layden is being held for investigation of vehicular homicide but had not been formally charged with a crime as of Monday morning.
