Dramatic weather maps show huge 80mph storm heading straight for UK

A massive 80mph storm ripping across the Atlantic – sparking Met Office weather warnings – has been tracked heading for Britain.

The Met today confirmed Storm Ciara is on a collision course with Britain, with a yellow warning for wind issued for the entire country.

It warns dangerous winds of up to 80mph are expected, and that they could spark power cuts, damage to buildings and travel disruption.

The storm is set to make landfall on Saturday night and wreak weather chaos throughout Sunday in a weekend washout.

And weather maps on WXCharts, seen by Daily Star Online, have now revealed the full extent of the storm that is churning across the pond.

They show a huge area of purple – signifying high winds – and even areas of white in northern England and coastal areas to suggest even stronger winds of 120kph.

They also show a massive band of rain which will engulf the country at the same time, potentially sparking flood warnings.

In the Met Office’s warning, it states: “Very strong winds are likely across much of the UK later Saturday and through Sunday.

“Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are likely across many inland areas, with gusts 70, possibly 80 mph around some exposed coasts and hills, especially in the north and west.

“Heavy rain will be an additional hazard, especially over western hills. Winds of this strength across a wide area have the potential to produce disruption to transport, along with some coastal impacts, especially in the west.”

Confirming the name of the storm, the Met tweeted today: “#StormCiara has been named and will bring very unsettled weather across the UK through Saturday night and Sunday.”
