Dramatic moment police rescue kidnapped baby after 70mph car chase

The baby was snatched by James Dempsey, 35, from his Sutton Coldfield home on April 3.

Following West Midlands police’s urgent appeal in tracing the baby, they received two reports of a possible sighting.

At 9.30pm the following day, Dempsey led police on a 70mph chase before his Vauxhall Astra was intercepted in Bickenhill Lane near Birmingham airport.

Body cameras worn by the officers shows the touching moment the baby was found unharmed and in the front passenger seat of the man’s car.

Officers can be seen reaching in and pulled the baby out while Dempsey was arrested from behind the wheel.

They quickly place the baby on a jacket to check he isn’t hurt before wrapping him in a police fleece in a bid to keep him warm.

One officer strokes the tot’s face to comfort the boy, saying: “Hi, it’s OK.

And when the baby begins to cry, the kind-hearted officer picked the baby up to cradle him adding: “Alright, monkey.”

West Midlands Police Chief Inspector Ian Ingram said: “Despite the commotion − with blue lights flashing and sirens blaring − the baby stayed remarkably calm throughout the ordeal and only cried when officers started cleaning him up.

Dempsey appeared in Birmingham Crown Court yesterday having admitted child abduction, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, theft and motoring offences.

He was jailed for 27 months.

The court heard how the 35-year-old − who is known to Ms Forrester − stayed at the Sutton Coldfield address overnight on April 2 and 3 but disappeared with the baby in the morning.

West Midlands Police’s appeal was shared widely across social media and prompted two 999 calls that proved crucial in helping officers trace his Vauxhall Astra.

It comes after a twisted dad who threw his one-year-old off a roof walks free from court.
