Don't Stop Me Now top of the charts for our favourite car sing-alongs
Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen is named top of the charts for our favourite car sing-alongs
- Don’t Stop Me Now, beat Abba’s Dancing Queen and Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer
- The poll of 2,000 motorists found that 78 per cent of us sing while in the car
They probably weren’t thinking of motorists when they wrote it, but a hit by Queen has topped a poll of our favourite car sing-alongs.
Don’t Stop Me Now, released as a single in 1979, beat Abba’s Dancing Queen into second place in the vote, while Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi was third.
The poll of 2,000 motorists found 78 per cent sing in the car – although only 21 per cent of those who do so think they are any good at it. More than four in ten (42 per cent) who enjoy singing claimed it is ‘essential’ to their driving experience, and 51 per cent said it makes them happy.
A spokesman for Fiat, which commissioned the survey, said: ‘Our research highlights the joy that singing in a car brings to drivers. Clearly, the private sanctuary of a car gives drivers the confidence to hit the high notes, even if people don’t think they can actually sing.’

Fleetwood Mac had the most songs in the top 40, with The Chain and Dreams placed, and Go Your Own Way at sixth. Frank Sinatra, David Bowie and Madonna had two tracks each.
The study by OnePoll found 16 per cent of motorists have been asked to stop singing, while 11 per cent have been embarrassed after being caught doing so.
Nearly two-thirds (64 per cent) believe music is essential for the best driving experience but 65 per cent have had arguments over the choice of listening.
Don’t Stop Me Now was written by Freddie Mercury and reached number nine in early 1979.
