Donald Trump sparks outrage after ‘falling asleep’ as the Queen gives state banquet speech
US President Donald Trump ended the first day of his visit to the UK with the event at Buckingham Palace yesterday.
Hosted by the Queen, most of the Royal Family were in attendance, including Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Charles, Camilla Parker Bowles.
Her Majesty spoke to those in attendance after making her way to her seat with Trump.
But, according to some viewers at home, the president was caught on camera falling asleep as the monarch gave her speech.
The clip shows Trump’s eyes appearing to close in front of the hundreds in attendance.
He then seems to jolt awake before standing up to give his own speech.
It may just have been a case of the billionaire tycoon simply lowering his gaze, but viewers back at home had other theories.
“How offensive that Donald Trump was falling asleep during Queen Elizabeth’s speech,” one wrote.
Another commented: “Good God. He’s falling asleep at the royal dinner, what an a***.”
“Mr President, as we look to the future I’m confident that our common values and shared interest will continue to unite us.
“Tonight we celebrate an alliance that has helped to ensure the safety and prosperity of both our peoples for decades, and which I believe will endure for many years to come.”
Trump responded by praising Her Majesty as “the spirit of dignity, duty and patriotism that beats proudly in every British heart”.
It wasn’t the only moment that caught viewer’s attention yesterday.
Some claimed the president had broken royal protocol by touching the Queen.
Trump used a bizarre handshake to greet the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
