Dog ‘stolen from garden’ six years ago returned to family in tearful reunion

A mother and daughter that lost their dog six years ago are overjoyed after he turned up over a thousand miles away in Florida.

King, a chihuahua mix, was believed to have been stolen from the Vasquez family’s back garden in San Antonio, Texas, in 2014.

Despite a desperate search, the Vasquezes were unable to find their missing pup and thought he was lost forever: “We legit thought he was gone,” daughter Danae Vasquez told local radio station WPLG.

It’s a mystery how King – aged 15 – ended up in Florida. A woman there had reportedly taken the little dog in after a neighbour had told her he could no longer care for it.

She took King to the Humane Society in Broward County, Florida and they checked him for a microchip. It was then that they contacted the Vasquezes back in Texas.

“They called and said Danae, King is alive. I was so confused,” Danae said. “They said he is in Florida right now. We were crying. I asked, “How do we get him back?””

The family drove 20 hours from their home in San Antonio Texas to Florida to be reunited with their long-lost pet.

At a tearful reunion Danae and her mother hugged King and thanked the Humane Society for their help in bringing him back to them.

Danae said the society’s staff had given their own personal time to help reunite them with King: “They kept us updated 24/7. Communicating with us even when they weren’t even at work,” she said.

Her mother Deborah cried tears of joy as she added: “He still looks the same, just a little white…

"So happy to have him back in the family where he belongs.”

Both they and the Humane Society stressed that this was a demonstration of the importance of microchipping your pets.
