A heroic dog is being treated for severe burns after saving four people from a major fire in a hospice.

Matilda raised the alarm after the blaze took hold in the Vasilek shelter in St Petersburg, Russia, running into the building to get residents’ attention.

Sadly, she passed out due to carbon monoxide inhalation and remained in the building, suffering appalling burns.

Matilda was only saved later, and had suffered grievous injuries.

Volunteers Elena Kalinina and Alexander Tsinkevich managed to recover the severely wounded animal from the burned-out hospice.

The pregnant dog “cried and trembled in pain, but heroically endured everything”, said a local news report.

Now animal campaigners at Vasilek shelter in St Petersburg are doing their best to help Matilda recover from the deep, and obviously very painful, burns.

A statement from the shelter said: ”Matilda's face, neck and abdomen were severely burned.”

"She was checked over by a fertility specialist who looked at her for a very long time and carefully studied the puppies.

“Now it is impossible to understand the number of babies she is carrying, since she is a big dog.”

But Matilda – known as Motya – will not be able to feed her puppies since her nipples are badly burned.

After the fire, the hospice owner told reporters that they feared they would no longer able to take care of Matilda due to the severity of her injuries.

Earlier this week, footage emerged of a police officer unleashed his hound to tackle a suspected carjacker to the ground.

The pursuit started after officers from the Pasco Sheriff's Office in Florida, US, received information on the suspect.

Bodycam footage released by the police captures deputy Carmack, a K-9 officer driving the scene before setting the trained animal, Shep, to chase after the suspect.
