A sex tourist has been arrested after having sex with a 14-year-old girl in a luxury hotel after paying her mum, reports say.

Jason Roy Hutchinson, 47, from California, US, flew a family from Sao Paulo state to Rio de Janeiro and offered the mum-of-two cash in exchange for a night with her child, according to police.

Hutchinson, whose doctor wife is treating coronavirus patients in America, had his hotel room raided by police on January 5, while he had sex with the teenager.

Police said that the girl's mum has also been arrested along for allowing him to have sex with her in the room next to where she and her two-year-old son were booked by Hutchinson.

The Brazilian woman and children received plane tickets to Rio de Janeiro, where the US suspect booked a BRL 1,500 (£207) night room in a luxury hotel in the upscale neighbourhood of Copacabana.

According to reports, the cops burst into the room while the man was in the middle of having sex with the girl on January 5.

They had apparently been alerted to the fact that an American tourist had been seen at the hotel with the "young girl" who was clearly not his daughter.

Detectives accessed the hotel security cameras and their suspicions were confirmed when they saw the man kissing and stroking the young teen in the lobby and other areas of the hotel.

They then broke into his room where they found him having sex with the girl while her mother was in the room next door with her two-year-old son.

The police said the family had been persuaded by offers of money from Hutchinson to travel from their home in Sao Paulo State to Rio so that he could have sex with her.

Hutchinson told the police during questioning that he lived in Hermosa Beach in California, and he had been planning to visit Brazil with his wife.

However, his wife is a doctor and had to remain in the US where she is a frontline worker in the fight against COVID-19, he said.

Hutchinson confessed that he had made the trip alone just so he could have sex with the girl, but insisted he was unaware of her age.

A preliminary investigation suggested that it is not the first time Santos has prostituted her young teenage daughter.

Police officer Felipe Santoro told local media: "We believe the victim has been sexually exploited for some time, since her mother doesn't work and she accompanies her daughter on various trips. She even instructed her on how to act with clients."

Both suspects will face trial.
