Diego Lopez, suspect in murder of 14-year-old Josiaz “JoJo” Aragon, charged as an adult

A 17-year-old suspect in the shooting death of a teenager in southwest Denver is being charged as an adult with first-degree murder.

Diego E. Lopez faces additional felony charges in connection with the death of 14-year-old Josiaz “JoJo” Aragon, according to a Thursday news release from the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

On Aug. 8, a passerby spotted Aragon’s body on a baseball field near the Southwest Recreation Center, 9200 W. Saratoga Place, and police were notified. Aragon had been beaten, stabbed and shot.

Lopez was arrested Friday as a suspect in the case. He is also charged with aggravated robbery with a real or simulated weapon, tampering with evidence, both felonies; and a misdemeanor charge of possession of a firearm by a juvenile.

At a news conference Saturday evening outside the recreation center, police said the pair knew each other through school and they had been discussing a gun sale over the summer. They met to finalize the gun deal when the crime occurred.
