MARINE officials called off the search for a small glider plane that allegedly went down in the waters roughly one mile off Long Beach Island, New Jersey.

The search was officially called off shortly after 1pm local time on Thursday, June 17, after a two-hour hunt.

Did a plane crash in Long Beach Island?

The small glider plane was first reported to have crashed into the ocean around 11:30am on June 17.

However, after hours of scouting the waters, officials did not find an aircraft or passengers stranded at sea.

At the time of the reported crash, Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy confirmed officers were surveying the scene on jet skis.

According to Mastronardy, a single 911 call came in at around 11:30am.

The caller said a paraglider was down in the water about a half-mile off shore.

At the time of the reported incident, the USCG Mid-Atlantic tweeted, "BREAKING We have received a report of a plane crash off Long Beach Island, NJ.

"Coast Guard has diverted a helo from Air Station Atlantic City and crews from Station Atlantic City and Station Barnegat Light. Updates to follow."

Boats and helicopters were recorded searching a wide area offshore for well over two hours before ultimately calling off the search.

New Jersey State Police and Coast Guard helicopters were among those participating in the search.
