Two men linked to Trump's lawyer Giuliani arrested on campaign-finance violations

WASHINGTON (REUTERS) – Two men associated with US President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani have been arrested over violations of campaign finance laws, a spokesman for the Manhattan US Attorney’s office said on Thursday (Oct 10).

The two Florida businessmen, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, are expected to appear in a federal court in Virginia later on Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Giuliani and John Dowd, the lawyer for the two men, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Source: De-escalation most likely outcome of trade talks

New York (CNN Business)The US stock market jumped higher Thursday, as President Donald Trump is due to meet Chinese Vice Premier Liu He.

Trade negotiations between the United States and China are resuming Thursday for the first time since July. Trump called it a “big day” for the negotiations in a tweet, adding “they want to make a deal, but do I?”
Trump also announced he would meet with Liu at the White House on Friday.

Stocks had started the session more or less flat, but a rally kicked off following the tweet. The Dow (INDU) traded some 200 points, or 0.8%, up. At its peak, the index was up nearly 260 points.
The S&P 500 (SPX) was up 0.9%, while the Nasdaq Composite (COMP) rose 0.8%.

“The market is rallying today because a meeting is taking place that we thought was taking place until we thought it wasn’t taking place,” said JJ Kinahan, chief strategist at TD Ameritrade. “Its like a high school cafeteria.”
Indeed, the trade negotiations come amid an onslaught of headlines and developments in US-China relations this week.

The US blacklisted 28 Chinese organizations over their alleged involvement in human rights violations. On Wednesday, a Reuters report said Chinese official weren’t optimistic about progress in the talks because the US blacklisting Chinese organizations hurt Beijing’s goodwill.
A Bloomberg report Wednesday meanwhile fueled hopes that a partial trade could be reached.

Fox News correspondent’s harrowing report of ‘atrocities’ in Syria goes viral

That’s how one Special Forces soldier in Syria described his personal feelings on Wednesday toward the Trump administration’s abrupt decision to pull troops from the region and open Kurdish fighters up to a Turkish offensive, according to a report from Fox News national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin.

“Turkey is not doing what it agreed to. It’s horrible,” the source continued. “We met every single security agreement. The Kurds met every single agreement. There was no threat to the Turks — none — from this side of the border.”

The death toll continues to mount amid the Turkish airstrikes, artillery fire and ground offensive, the Associated Press reported. Turkey’s President Erdogan was cited by NBC News as saying more than 100 people have been killed.

“This is insanity. I don’t know what they call atrocities, but they are happening,” the soldier explained to Fox News, adding that American troops are doing “nothing… Just sitting by and watching it unfold.”
