Derelict house left rundown for 13 years set to go at auction for £90k

A house which has been left rundown and derelict for 13 years is set to be put up for auction.

The three-bedroom house, in Stafford, is on the market for £90,000 plus fees.

The house was taken over by Stafford Borough Council, after the government gave permission to sell it, given how long it had been derelict for while neighbours had also been complaining about it.

According to Birmingham Mail, the owner of the property died in 2013 and with the council unable to trace any next of kin, despite extensive searches, they asked for permission to make a Compulsory Purchase Order, which has been granted.

SDL Property Auctions, which is handling the sale, has described the house as being “situated behind the trees within the front garden."

They said: “[It is a] three bedroomed property that requires full refurbishment as the property has fallen into a state of disrepair.

“While SDL Property Auctions have inspected the property it is not possible to undertake viewings due to the condition of the ground floor flooring. The property comprises hallway, two reception rooms, kitchen, three bedrooms and a bathroom."

The house comes fully fitted with very outdated furniture in every room, so clean up and removal costs would need factoring into any purchase made.

Councillor Jeremy Pert, cabinet member for communities and health, said: “This has been an exceptional case in which we have gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure we can get this property back on the market and I am sure with the right investment and works it will make a nice home in the future.

“We will look to work with owners of empty or run-down properties in the first instance to help bring them back in to use – and last year we assisted more than 75 homeowners to successfully do this.

“Obtaining a CPO is always a last resort as it can be a lengthy legal process which is why we would much rather work with people to remedy the situation in other ways.”

“Empty properties are a wasted resource which can quickly become a blight to the community – but we have a range of measures where we can help the owner, or their next of kin, make their property habitable.”

A CPO is is a legal function in the United Kingdom and Ireland that allows certain bodies to obtain land or property without the consent of the owner.
