Monday might be a good day to stay inside with air conditioning.

Denver weather forecasters with the National Weather Service predict the temperature will climb to 99 degrees Monday under clear skies. Winds are expected to be light.

Air quality will be a concern, however. An Ozone Action Day Alert is in effect for the Front Range urban corridor through 4 p.m. Monday, meaning there is a higher-than-usual level of pollution in the air.

The air quality is expected to be in the moderate to unhealthy level for sensitive groups, the weather service said. This impacts residents of Douglas, Jefferson, Denver, western Arapahoe, western Adams, Broomfield, Boulder, Larimer and Weld counties.

The weather service recommends residents in these areas limit driving of gas- and diesel-powered vehicles. People with respiratory issues, such as lung disease or asthma, could notice breathing discomfort. It’s recommended to reduce heavy outdoor exertion.

There is a chance the hot weather could lead to some severe storms Monday, the weather service said. Isolated thunderstorms are most likely on the Eastern Plains late Monday afternoon and evening. Forecasters said large hail and damaging wind gusts would be the primary hazards, if storms turn severe.

On Sunday, parts of the Denver metro area saw golf ball sized hail.

The Denver weather is only expected to get hotter as the week continues, with highs expected to reach triple digits in Denver on Tuesday and Wednesday — which could challenge the record high temperatures for those dates. The chance for thunderstorms also increases through Thursday.

Friday is expected to cool slightly, but not much, as high will still reach the upper 80s.
