Denver protests: Arrests drop on sixth night of George Floyd demonstrations
Denver Police Department officers arrested 21 people Tuesday night during protests over the death of George Floyd, a significant drop from the peak of 170 arrested on Sunday.
Two of the 21 were arrested on weapons charges, and 18 others were for curfew violations, according to data released by the police department. Another citation was for a misdemeanor.
For six days, thousands of people have taken to the streets because Floyd died on May 25 after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck while Floyd lay face down for eight minutes and 45 seconds. The death was recorded by bystanders and the painful video has led to nationwide protests over the deaths of unarmed black people at the hands of police officers.
Tuesday night’s demonstration was one of the biggest since the protests began. But police allowed people to stay on the streets well past a 9 p.m. curfew, and protesters largely remained peaceful as they marched and chanted slogans calling for racial justice.
