People who plan to get out after a year of staying close to home and celebrate Cinco de Mayo by cruising in bumper-to-bumper traffic on Federal Boulevard will be restricted to one lane each way this year.

Starting Saturday, Federal will be reduced to one lane each way between Sixth Avenue and West Evans Avenue. The restrictions will be in place Sunday and May 5 as well.

Denver police said in a statement Thursday that the reduced lanes will allow first responders to quickly get where they need to go. Police encouraged people celebrating to be safe and plan ahead if they consume alcohol or marijuana.

“With so many options available – from designated drivers and public transportation, to taxis and rideshare services – there’s no excuse for driving impaired,” police said

Officers will enforce traffic laws along Federal and noise ordinances, including loud stereos and excessive horn honking. The curfew for people under 18 will also be enforced, starting at midnight Friday and Saturday to 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday.
