An officer with the Davis Police in Northern California has died following a shooting that happened on Thursday night, reports said.

The suspect in the shooting was still at large amid an incident that brought a public advisory to “shelter in place” that was later lifted.

News of the officer’s death was reported by Mariel Martinez at KCRA News.

It was the first time that the police department lost an officer since 1959, she added.

Davis Police identified her as 22-year-old Natalie Corona, who was sworn in as an officer on Aug. 2.

She was considered a “rising star” with the police force, Davis Enterprise newspaper reporter Lauren Keene tweeted.

The Sacramento Bee reported that a female officer was shot close to 5th and D Streets as she responded to an accident involving three cars at about 7 p.m.

She was taken to UC Davis Medical Center, the newspaper added.

Reporter Hannah Darden tweeted at about 11:15 p.m. PT that police reportedly had the suspect cornered inside a home.

The suspect was believed to be on foot.

He was described as a white man in his 20s with an average build, wearing a baseball cap, a black jacket, blue or tan jeans and black tactical boots.

A “shelter in place” advisory issued for the University of California, Davis was lifted at about 11:30 p.m. PT, but people were still advised to avoid the city’s downtown.
