This is the incredible moment a selfless hero jumped into a freezing cold American river to rescue a small puppy.

A crowd had gathered on a bridge around a woman who was pleading for someone to rescue a dog trapped in the icy water below.

Footage shows the daring rescue attempt by a brave coastguard officer who can be seen swimming towards the stranded animal on the Milwaukee River.

As the rescue worker pushes through mounds of floating debris and ice, the puppy visibly gets more tired and appears to be in danger of going under. 

It is not known how the dog got into the river, as the banks of the Milwaukee are extremely steep. 

But as the coastguard nears the distressed dog, two large blocks of ice come together and force the dog’s head underneath.

The crowd can be heard screaming, terrified that the animal has been lost so close to be being rescued.

With time of the essence, the man throws himself onto the ice and frantically searches in the dirty water.

Seconds later he lifts up a small black blob from the depths.

The crowd cheer as they realise that he has rescued the dog alive, although clearly weakened from the ordeal.

The crowd above can be heard screaming as the animal is forced underneath by two colliding sheets of ice. As time runs out the coastguard finally find the small dog and pulls it to safety, much to the crowd’s delight

Content with the successful rescue operation, the coastguard takes to catch his breath on the ice block before bring the dog to land.

The Milwaukee River, which runs through the eponymous city in Wisconsin state, can prove extremely treacherous in winter, with temperatures not lifting above 4 C for months.

The video was taken by Anne Graceffa, who had been sat on the banks of the Milwaukee River in Wisconsin when she spotted the daring rescue.
