Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister has posted an emotional open letter referencing their late father after the footballer tragically revealed his newborn son has died. 

The Manchester United star posted on Instagram tonight that one of the newborn twins he had been expecting with partner Georgina Rodriguez had died. 

In a statement the couple said was with ‘the greatest pain’ they had to confirm their baby had died. The other newborn twin, a girl, has survived. 

The 37-year-old’s sister, Katia Aveiro, posted a message from her home in Brazil, saying: ‘Our little angel is already on daddy’s lap’, a reference to their father Dinis who died in 2005.

She said: ‘I love you and my heart is with you over there. May God take care of you and strengthen your path more and more. 

‘Our angel is already on father’s lap. And our little girl is there firm and strong and full of health and is going to show us with every day that only love matters.’ 

She posted the message along pictures of the couple with her two children.

Ronaldo’s father died at the age of 52 of liver failure when the footballing superstar was just 20 years old.

Ronaldo’s mum Dolores Aveiro has said of her late husband: ‘He was drunk almost every day. I never really knew him well. I would have liked him to have been around more. 

‘Although he never mistreated his children, I became his victim.’

The tragic news of his child’s death was revealed in a joint statement released by the pair earlier this evening.

‘It is with our deepest sadness we have to announce that our baby boy has passed away. It is the greatest pain that any parents can feel,’ the announcement read.

‘Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.

‘We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support.

‘We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time.

‘Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you.’

The footballing legend broke the news that he and Georgina were expecting twins in October 2021.   

Ronaldo shared the news with fans on social media, gushing that the pair’s ‘hearts are full of love.’

‘Delighted to announce we are expecting twins. Our hearts are full of love – we can’t wait to meet you,’ he wrote.

Ronaldo’s post showed himself and Georgina proudly displaying their twins’ ultrasounds, along with an image of his four children swimming together.

The Manchester United star also has son Cristiano Jr., 11, and twins Eva and Mateo, four. 

Since meeting in 2016, Georgina has followed five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo from Madrid to Turin and then Manchester, as he left Real Madrid for Juventus and United.

Georgina and footballer Cristiano famously met while she was working as a retail assistant in Madrid, as they caught eyes across the rails in a Gucci store in 2016. In 2020, she admitted that the chance meeting with Ronaldo made her ‘fall in love at first sight’

Ronaldo’s oldest son Cristiano Jr. was born in the United States in 2010 but immediately taken back to Madrid to be raised in Spain. The identity of his mother is unknown.

In June 2017, the then-Real Madrid star surprised fans with the news he’d welcomed twins Eva and Mateo through a surrogate, and just one month later he and Georgina announced they were expecting their first child together.

Asked by Spanish publication El Mundo whether he was ‘happy’ to be expecting again, he said: ‘Yes, very much.’

Georgina then gave birth to their daughter Alana on November 12, 2017, with the sportsman announcing the news on Instagram, writing: ‘Alana Martina is just born! Both Geo and Alana are doing great! We are all very happy!’
